A nice article on Las Catalinas just came in in the Enespera magazine in Costa Rica. Spanish version and English version. Well done!

Las Catalinas Article in Aspen Magazine
Here is a good article in Aspen Magazine on Las Catalinas. There are some real similarities between Las Catalinas and Aspen – a primary point of the article. In both cases the main attractions are the walkable town itself and recreation on the natural landscape (or sea-scape) surrounding the town. And Aspen, despite its ritzy image, is less “exclusive” than you might think as it is an open town with lodging, food and other necessities available at a variety of price points.
In creating Las Catalinas we have tried to take lessons from lots of great towns – and Aspen is high on the list. Among the lessons I take from there are:
- The joy of having unspoiled nature right at the edge of town where you can walk to it.
- Wagner Park – this is really just a rugby field, but it is located right downtown adjacent to the pedestrian blocks. The scene here on a pretty summer evening with kids and families playing is the best thing in Aspen.
- The Pedestrian Streets – a few key streets of downtown are pedestrian only. They are the liveliest, most successful streets in the downtown (contrary to accepted conventional wisdom regarding what works and what doesn’t).
- The tiny plaza in front of Paradise Bakery -the place for evening musical performances (instrument cases open for donations).
- The importance of good food!
Rock on, Aspen, and thanks for the shout out, Aspen Magazine.

Las Catalinas Article in The Atlantan Magazine

There is a nice article about Las Catalinas by Wendy Bowman- Littler in the current issue of The Atlantan magazine. Here is a link to a synopsis of the article:

This digital reader has the whole article on page 76:
Nice Writeup on Pura Vida Ride, Las Catalinas Trails.
Here is a great article on PVR at Barefoot Fitness. My favorite quote, “I would carve through dense jungle, past hanging orchids and a rushing creek and then pop around a corner and see the Pacific Ocean glistening below me. The only sounds were the slight breeze, birds calling and my own breathing. How this place is not on the cover of some mountain biking magazine, I have no idea.”

Financial Times: Costa Rica is Best Country for Investment
The pink paper delivered great news last week — Financial Times‘ FDI Intelligence unit named Costa Rica the “Best Country of the Future for Foreign Direct Investment in Central America & the Caribbean, 2011 – 2012.” Costa Rica climbed from second position to be ranked as the most attractive country in the Caribbean and Central America for investment. We dominated the rankings, topping the Best Human Resources category, as well as ranking in the top two for Best Economic Potential, Best for Business Friendliness and Best FDI Strategy.
The purchase of the Las Catalinas property was heavily fueled by emotion — homeowners love this place, its beauty, its richness in nature, the adventure and relaxation it provides. But it’s also nice to hear that an authority like FT agrees that it’s a wise (the wisest, even) investment.

More Honors for Lola’s
I tend to explain Lola’s to people by saying it is just the best beach bar/restaurant I have ever seen. Well, I’m not the only one. This article in Wild Blue Yonder says they are number two in the world. This one at AOL Travel puts them in their un-numbered top ten. Congratulations to Don and Christi and the whole staff!

Playa Danta Plug at Stand Up Paddle Connect
The website Stand Up Paddle Connect (“Connecting Paddlers Around the World”) has published a very thorough and accurate description of the SUP scene at our Playa Danta.
I quote: “Playa Danta in the Las Catalinas community is poised to become a pre-eminent international stand up paddle (sup) board destination. The Guanacaste coastline along the north west of Costa Rica is a dramatic and rich area that offers inspiring venues for all kinds of ocean water sports. Playa Danta is located in the heart of the Guanacaste “Gold Coast” and is particularly unique in that it is an amazingly scenic flat-water bay with near-shore islands within a one-mile paddle.” Right on.

Great new movie on Glenwood Park
Glenwood Park is the 28-acre new neighborhood in Atlanta that my partners and I developed starting back in 2001. It is the subject of the pilot episode of a new documentary series called American Makeover – about recreating the built environment into something more sustainable and healthy. The Congress of the New Urbanism is being held next month in Atlanta, and Glenwood Park is a noteworthy accomplishment in Atlanta. I think that’s how we got to be the feature of this pilot. The video is really well done! I hope you enjoy it.
BTW for me Las Catalinas is the next step. Some of my friends call it the new new urbanism – pedestrian streets, using the topography to create privacy and great views, the beautiful natural environment. I think we are taking some of the accomplishments of new urbanism to a whole new level of delight, beauty, and wonderfulness.
Tico Times Article on Las Catalinas
Some more press appeared today on Las Catalinas, a nice article in the Tico Times, which is the leading English language newspaper in Costa Rica. From the article:
“I had the idea of building a town where the different elements of life such as houses and apartments and shops and workplaces are together on walk-able streets, rather than separated out into separate pods,” Brewer told The Tico Times. “One of the things that I hope we will accomplish is to introduce a pattern of development that I think would serve Costa Rica wonderfully well, which is that of a compact, walk-able town with lots of preserved nature surrounding it…
“The element of beauty is important,” Brewer said. “What we aspire to have is a place that has the energy and inclusiveness of a place like Tamarindo, but that’s well-planned and beautiful. Places like that do not exist on beaches in the new world tropics.”
