Liberia Air Arrivals Soaring

In January 80,680 people arrived in Liberia’s Daniel Oduber Airport.  That’s up from 65,000 in 2011 and 51,000 in 2009, both of which were themselves record years.  December was similarly strong.  New flights and the new terminal building are making it easier and easier to get to Las Catalinas.

A Compliment at TED

I attended TEDxAtlanta this week (for those of you who aren’t familiar with TED, it’s an international nonprofit devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading” via lectures, and is becoming increasingly popular in the technology, entertainment and design worlds.  It’s featured speakers ranging from business giants like Ray Anderson and Steve Jobs to artists like Boston Philharmonic conductor Benjamin Zander and Radcliffe Bailey.  There are “TEDx” events across the world, including in Atlanta where I live).  TED promotes ideas that make the world a better place, be it a cool technological solution or the creative process of a songwriter.

People who know TED typically love TED and seek out its content by attending these events or watching simulcasts on the web.  The event in Atlanta this week had a sold out crowd of about 300, and had about 15,000 simulcast viewers watching from 50 countries.  That’s a decent reach!   I was excited to be there, but excitement turned to sheer glee when the first speaker, Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones keyboardist, tree farmer, conservationist, and author of “Growing a Better America” on smart growth), mentioned Las Catalinas’ founder, Charles Brewer, as someone who knows how to develop communities in the right, responsible way — by balancing density with nature, promoting human interaction and opportunities for fun, and making things walkable.  Great compliment.  All reasons why I’m happy and humbled to be on the Las Catalinas team — it’s the kind of place I’d design, and the kind of place where I want to live.

Stand Up Paddle Challenge Weekend – My Perspective

dsc_7001 This past Saturday morning Pura Vida Ride hosted the Robert August Stand Up Paddle Challenge, featuring three races starting and ending on Playa Danta.  It could not have been any better.  There were paddlers of all ages and abilities and plenty of spectators too.

There were many children at the event, and lots of families from the wonderful nearby La Paz Community School.  All the design and operational decisions we make at Las Catalinas have children as a primary focus.  Our thinking is that if we create a great place for children – a safe, interesting, fun place where they can explore and enjoy their freedom – we will have created a great place for everyone else too.   Seeing all the children there happily running, playing, swinging, crab-chasing, swimming, kayaking, boogie boarding, stand up paddling – it was a dream come true for me.  Even better, in the near future this will be just a typical day at Las Catalinas.

Thanks to Pura Vida Ride for putting on this great event.  They took lots of great photos.  Here is a gallery of some that I took:

(Facebook version here may work more quickly, and has more photos.)

[SinglePic not found]The magic began for me on Friday afternoon.  I finished up my work and took out a  board from PVR to do a practice run of the race course.  Then I walked home (not my house quite yet, but my next door neighbor Bob Davey’s) and changed.  I then headed back to Lola’s to grab a drink and  then I strolled around town checking things out and visiting with people.  There was a convivial sunset scene at Lola’s.  Afterwards I strolled home to dinner with my son (who was with me on this trip).  Later we went  to sleep in the fresh air with the sound of the waves.

It is happening.  It’s magical.  You need to come and see.

Our First Night

Sheryl and I spent the first night in our new home at Las Catalinas on Wednesday night.

What a wonderful dream come true.

Though we are not quite to Charles’ vision of what Las Catalinas will be like in years to come, we are so close! After spending the day unpacking boxes and crates and setting up our home (while many workers were furiously finishing installing fans, lights, cabinets and counter tops) I walked down to the beach for a late afternoon swim. The sparkling turquoise water was incredibly refreshing after a long day at work.  Pizza and tuna poke were delivered by Jen at Lola’s, our fabulous beach restaurant, and we sat out on our patio (with beers in hand) to enjoy a great meal under the night sky. The ocean was lit by the moon and feeling like it was just off of our porch. The breeze was delightful. The reflections and shadows of the newly installed lights on the porch bar were dazzling. We went to sleep with the sound of the waves lapping onto the beach and woke up to freshly brewed coffee and pumpkin bread that we had purchased the day before at Pura Vida Ride. Las Catalinas is no longer just a dream.

It is difficult to completely express the gratitude that we have for so many who worked so unbelievably hard to make this dream a reality. From Charles’ vision to Jim’s and Luis Diego’s efforts to build all of these homes, the restaurant and the activity center,  we all can now enjoy Las Catalinas. We hope you will take the opportunity to experience this magical place.

College, Walking, Friendship, and Las Catalinas

Some fragament of the Amherst College Class of '81

I just returned from my Amherst College 30 year reunion.  As always, I am struck by the strength and durability of the friendships that my classmates and I forged back then.  We tend to think of our school and even our particular class as very special.  But I suspect that something like what we have experienced is shared by many.

I have thought about college campus life a lot as we have developed the plans for Las Catalinas.  For many people college is the most walkable, car-free environment they will ever experience.  For many it is also a very special time.  It seemed so easy to make deep friendships in college.  It has seemed much harder to do so afterwards out in the “real world”.  I’m quite sure I’m not the only one who has experienced this.  But why?  And what might that have to do with Las Catalinas?  I think these are some of the reasons, and some of the lessons:

  1. A Pedestrian Environment – People just relate differently to each other when they are walking as opposed to driving.  It is hard to say hello to a car.  Pedestrians passing one another rarely scream and give each other the finger. This cannot be said of drivers.  Walking creates opportunity for chance encounters, and frequent encounters.  Walking makes “just stopping by to visit” somehow seem OK (as discussed in my earlier post).
  2. A Community of Shared Values – If you have a chance encounter with someone at a place like Amherst College, you can be pretty sure that you have a lot in common in terms of values.  You have a place to begin a conversation, and you have a certain comfort level that you wouldn’t have with someone you met in another context.  You are practically friends before you even start!  It is the same way at Las Catalinas already, and will become more so.  Las Catalinas appeals to people with particular values.  They typically value nature and enjoy outdoor recreation.  They are curious and eager to explore and learn.  They tend to be well educated and successful.  If you are one of those people, you can be pretty sure that the person over there at the next table at Lola’s del Norte is too.  They might be from a totally different part of the world from you, but you likely have some important things in common.  That is nice … and a headstart towards friendship.
  3. A sense of shared experience and purpose – My best friends have always tended to be people that I really DO things with.  In college you go to class together, you study together, you play sports together, you eat together, and together you try to make the world a better place.  Of course you become friends!  In Las Catalinas it will be the same.  People will be recreating and socializing and working together in myriad ways.  More profoundly, the citizens of Las Catalinas will be creating a new town that really stands for something – a joyful, healthy, fulfilling and sustainable vision of “the good life”.  That’s important, and doing things together that are important may be the ultimate bonding experience.
  4. A Gathering Place – One thing that I loved about college life is that if I wanted to see some friends I didn’t need to set up an appointment, I didn’t need a scheduled event.  There were places to hang out – and if I went there I could find my friends.  Oh how I miss that in my adult life!  In the early days at Las Catalinas those places are the beach, and Lola’s.  It is already happening.

I’d be curious to hear if these observations ring true to you, and what lessons you might see therein for Las Catalinas.  I hope that Las Catalinas will create some of the magic of those college years for people of all ages … including you – and me!

Cool New Urban Project in Rome.

Professor Samir Younes forwarded this video to me.  It is a proposed New Urban project near Rome.  Italy, that is.  It is at a different scale than Las Catalinas – bigger buildings, more big city.  But it has some things in common such as a great emphasis on beautiful public spaces, an irregular urban pattern, and a traditional architectural language.  I hope you enjoy it.

I’d like to have a computer model like that for Las Catalinas. But soon we will have something better – the real thing!

Happier Than a Billionaire

You have to love the name of this website.  Also you’ll enjoy this post from Nadine about her first visit to Lola’s del Norte.  The photo above is from Nadine also.

So, I wonder how hard it is to be happier than a billionaire?  I’d say that depends on where you are, and who is with you :)

A Blog in Praise of Las Catalinas

I recently had the  pleasure of meeting with Kyle Porter and some of his friends here in Atlanta to talk about Las Catalinas.  Kyle is a big fan of what we are doing, and his enthusiasm is contagious – here is his post about the event on his blog.

Lola’s del Norte is …. Open!!

Today was the first day of business. I am proud to say I was among the first customers! Everything looks great, and the food was fantastic.  Oh, I have been waiting a long time for this!  Come tomorrow and you too can be among the first customers.
