Infraestructura! Glamorous! Sexy!

We have a lot of infrastructure work going on at Las Catalinas right now.  OK, maybe not glamorous or sexy, but important!

Road grader at work1. We are paving the road from Potrero to Las Catalinas.  Yes!  Most of the heavy work to improve this road was done over a year ago, but for reasons that I will not bore you with it has not gotten its proper top coat of paving until now.  Most of the road will be paved with chipseal – a normal paving material for rural roads.  A few of the steeper sections will be done in concrete.

2013-05-09 08.32.412. We are building a water tank.  It is a big one – holding 100,000 gallons of water.  That should hold us for a while.  Yes!

3. We have begun infrastructure work for the next portions of beach town.  Earthwork underway now, to be followed by water, wastewater, electric, telecom, hardscape, and landscaping.  Yes!

Report on Spring at Las Catalinas

It is the changing of the seasons at Las Catalinas.  The dry season is winding down and we have had a couple of rains already.  Over the next couple of weeks the landscape will switch from dry season browns, yellows, and pinks to rainforest green.  The daytime temperatures will drop, and we will settle into the gentle pattern of the Las Catalinas rainy season – clear mornings, offshore sea breezes in the afternoon, sometimes an afternoon rain, and then clearing again around sunset.  It is soothing, refreshing, and for many local residents their favorite time of the year.

What a great season we have had!  The houses at Las Catalinas were at near 100% occupancy for the entire spring break season from the beginning of March through the first part of April.  The first Las Catalinas Triathlon (which I have shamefully failed to report on until now) was a huge success – sold out and conducted to rave reviews from the participants and spectators alike.  Semana Santa (Easter Week) was great, with lots of day visitors and fun events for all.  Town has been lively and full.  Real estate sales have been very good for us as well, as we have sold twelve properties so far this year.  Look for announcements from us soon about the next phases of growth at Las Catalinas.

Below is a small selection of photos from the season just past.  Enjoy!

Triathlon – Big Weekend at Las Catalinas

Route from water

This is a very big weekend at Las Catalinas.  Our first ever triathlon is tomorrow.  The event is sold out, in fact a little bit oversold with 160 people entered.  Preparations on site have been underway the last few days.  We are thrilled!  I am so wishing I were there.  Here are some pictures of the preparations:

 Flats rendering dec '12

Dear Friend of Las Catalinas,

Wow, there is a lot going on at Las Catalinas.  First I want to share a couple of announcements that will be important for those of you who are potentially interested in real estate at Las Catalinas, and then I will provide a general update on things.

First the announcements:

  • The Flats – We are about to build the first condominiums to be available at Las Catalinas.  They will be in a beautiful 12-unit building designed by Ricardo Arosemena with the working title “The Flats”, a rendering of which you see pictured above .  The building is located directly behind my house on what will be a beautiful plaza.  Pricing is between $200,000 and $450,000, plus a penthouse at $699,000.  Our sales team now has a sneak preview package available, and is planning on a Valentine’s Day release of the final package.  There is a lot of interest in The Flats already, and it appears they may sell very quickly.  If you are interested I would recommend contacting our sales team now at 506-2654-4600 (Costa Rica), 866-357-3872 (USA), or info@lascatalinascr.com.  The Valentine’s release will only go out to their list of interested parties, so if you are interested please get on the list!
  • Paseo Punta Penca Price Increase – We have now sold 11 of the 18 lots on Paseo Punta Penca, and we are approaching completion of the road and infrastructure to serve the lots there.  In recognition of this, we will have a price increase of 5% effective April 1 for the lots that remain unsold at that time, if any.  These are some of the finest lots we will ever have, with a great combination of proximity to the center of town yet some extra privacy and killer views. Night Hike

On the first day of this new year my son and I had a most fabulous experience doing a night hike at Las Catalinas.  We had no special equipment, just regular flashlights.  We were really trying to see a sloth, which I have yet to see at Las Catalinas (others have, just not me).  We headed up the mountain bike trail across the road from Plaza Danta.  The trail is perfect for night hiking because it is relatively wide and clear of any undergrowth, so you don’t have to worry about stepping on something you can’t see.

We didn’t see a sloth, but we did see:

Ringed Snail Eater Snake (Sibon anthracops) - This snake was absolutely beautiful, maybe 2 feet long, and very slow moving and docile.  It is not a species I was familiar with, but we identified it conclusively later based on the photos.  At the time I thought maybe it could be a coral snake of some variety.  Not so.  This guy is totally harmless and eats mainly snails, which it can extract from their shells thanks to special modifications of its jaws!  And then, three minutes later, we saw…

Central American Banded Gecko (Coleonyx mitratus) - Just a short distance down the trail we came upon this beauty – another docile and slow moving species that was previously unknown to me.  At this point I just couldn’t believe our good luck, and figured that would be it for cool animal sightings for the night.  Then…

Tarantula - Twenty minutes later we came upon this Tarantula.  I’m sorry I can’t tell you the species of this fellow – there are many different kinds.  And sorry that I didn’t get a better picture.  Just as I was getting the camera out, we heard the noise of what sounded like some heavy creature moving in the underbrush nearby.  Honestly it sounded so big we were a bit frightened.  So this is the best photo I could get of the spider and the out on the trail right next to us came…

Collared Ant Eater – local name Oso hormiguero or Tamandua (Tamandua mexicana) - Yes, an anteater!  I didn’t manage to get a photo, but one photo is almost certainly the same individual, photographed on Playa Danta.  These anteaters are solitary animals with a fairly small range of about 100 acres plus or minus.  They are mainly nocturnal, but not totally.  They are just fantastic looking, with prehensile tails (the kind that can grab on to things) and that distinctive anteater snout!

The hike was a huge success.  I imagine that we got very lucky – surely most hikes would not feature this extraordinary batch of animals.  But I highly recommend the activity.  We will be making guided night hikes a regular feature of Las Catalinas.  If you are staying in Las Catalinas before we get this on the regular calendar and you’d like to do a night hike, please ask us!

Las Catalinas Triathlon, February 17

We will have a major off-road triathlon at Las Catalinas on February 17, with a kids event preceding it the day before.  The Las Catalinas Triathlon will occur almost entirely within the boundaries of Las Catalinas, utilizing the great swimming conditions at Playa Danta and our world-class trail system.  The swim is 1,200 meters, the mountain bike is 30 kilometers (standard) or 15 kilometers (sprint), and the trail run is 7.5 kilometers.  There are divisions for relay teams, as well as age group divisions.

The race is being organized by the same organization that puts on the famous Guanaride each May.  The primary website for the event is here, and the Facebook page is here.

We are very excited about this event and are expecting a great turnout.  If you are interested in registering, you’ll find a form at the event website.  If you need some help with the Spanish, or anything else, please contact the Las Catalinas office at info@lascatalinascr.com, 2654-4600 from Costa Rica, or 866.357.3872 from the USA.

Note that the event date is on President’s Day weekend in the US – a perfect time for a winter getaway.

La Ruta Champ Paolo Montoya Visits Las Catalinas

Paolo with Las Catalinas cycling enthusiast Luis Diego.

Today we were honored to have 2012 La Ruta de los Conquistadores winner Paolo Montoya, visit Las Catalinas.  La Ruta is one of the most famous and difficult mountain bike stage races in the world.  It is held annually in Costa Rica and the route route follows the west to east route of the 16th Century Spanish Conquistador Juan de Caballon from the Pacific to the Atlantic.  This year’s race, the 2oth anniversary, was held just the other day – November 1 to 3.  Paolo also won in 2004.  His father, Rodrigo Montoya won in 2002 and 2003.

Paolo was at Las Catalinas for a ride on our excellent trail system and a celebratory lunch at Lola’s del Norte.

Sala IV Dismisses Case Against Las Catalinas

On Friday October 26th the Sala IV court dismissed the case against Las Catalinas.  Construction at Las Catalinas had been halted since August 3rd while the court investigated accusations made against Las Catalinas and various government agencies (previous blog post on this here).

We have not yet received the details of the court ruling, but we do know from the court website that the charges against us have been dismissed and found to be without merit. [Read more...]

Restoring a Forest

Walking on Las Catalinas trail.

I love the land that is Las Catalinas.  I love the trees, the animals, and the hills.  I love the sounds, the smells, and the breezes.  I love the trails that allow us to get out and enjoy the land. To me, and to all of us involved with Las Catalinas, taking the best possible care of this land is a sacred duty.  Our vision for Las Catalinas is a compact walkable gem of a town, surrounded by beautiful nature.  So, we are restoring a forest… [Read more...]
